Ambassador Nestor Osorio, in his capacity as Chairman of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), participated in the Eighth Global Conference on "Planet Workshops" at UNESCO headquarters in Paris and took part in the opening session titled "Has the transition been set in motion?". In his speech, Ambassador Osorio noted the important role of ECOSOC in achieving a balanced integration of the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
He also highlighted the need to provide a platform for dialogue between the various stakeholders to produce specific and effective solutions, in developing initiatives to strengthen equitable dissemination of sustainable innovations. For this reason, he referred to last Alliances Forum Economic and Social Council on "Partnerships for Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Development," which attracted more than 350 senior representatives of the private sector and foundations, as well as representatives of NGOs and academia.
Similarly, he suggested that the definition of a new development agenda is an excellent opportunity to align the interests of the business community with the goals of the UN to have a unified view of the way forward beyond 2015. Finally, said Rio +20 had laid the foundation to define a plan of action, but that it was essential for governments to include civil society, the private sector, academia and community-based organizations to work together and guided by a common agenda and aspiration that ties the three dimensions of sustainable development. »
