Presidency of Colombia in the Security Council of the UN has concludedt

New York, August 2, 2012

At the end of the Presidency of Colombia in the Security Council for the month of July, the Delegation of Colombia to the United Nations and Ambassador Nestor Osorio received congratulation and recognition by all Council members who stressed the leadership in a complex environment with events of particular gravity, and highlighted the effective management on the crisis in Syria.

During the month of the Presidency of Colombia, eight (8) resolutions were approved on issues as Syria, Darfur, Côte d'Ivoire, Iraq, Somalia / Eritrea, Cyprus, South Sudan and Peace and Security in Africa. A Syrian draft resolution was not adopted as an effect of the negative vote of two Permanent Members (Russia and China).

In the same manner seven (7) Press Statements concerning Libya, Congo, Guinea-Bissau, Lebanon, Somalia, the terrorist attack in Bulgaria and the International Criminal Court were adopted.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Maria Angela Holguin chaired an Open Debate on the problems of peace building in countries emerging from conflict, with the participation of 46 countries that made contributions on how to improve the restoration of constitutional and economic issues and how to make more efficient the UN presence.

An intense debate was held in the Council during the month as consequence of the intensification of conflict in Syria, and diplomatic efforts by Ambassador Nestor Osorio with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the Special Envoy Kofi Annan and representatives of the League Arabic were essential to try to pave the way for the cessation of violence and political dialogue. Unfortunately the efforts of the entire international community to seek a peaceful solution have been unsuccessful.
