Candidate nominated by Colombia for first time was elected member of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

New York, 10 June 2014

The Seventh Conference of the States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities elected today among 21 candidates to Dr. Carlos Parra Dussán as a member of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Dr. Parra Dussan, a lawyer with a PhD in Human Rights, was nominated by the Government of Colombia to be part of the Committee during the period 2015-2018, noting that the subject on disability gains great importance, particularly in the stage of the peace process and reparation to victims. The Committee is a body of independent experts responsible for monitoring implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities by the Member States.

The Government Colombia decided to support this aspiration in order to reaffirm its strong commitment to the social inclusion of people with disabilities, their families and caregivers; and its interest in strengthening and empowering exercise to influence their participation in ensuring their rights.

Colombia ratified the Convention on 10 May 2011.
