Dear political coordinators,
We finally come to an end of a very intense week. The bad news is that next week may be very similar. Let me update you on where we are.
Some comments for our business on Monday December 16:
1. Middle East: We have been informed by the Secretariat that SRSG Larsen will be briefing the Council on Middle East, but will not be able to do so in the morning as originally planned. Mr. Larsen will join the Secretary General in a morning meeting with the Israeli Defense Minister. The open briefing will take place beginning at 3 p.m. and will be followed by consultations.
2. Angola/UNMA: Various members of the Council have asked us to postpone the Angola/UNMA SRSG Gambari briefing at least into Tuesday 17 December. As you know, the report was made available to Council members this morning during consultations and the Presidency believes it makes sense to give delegations that extra day to prepare for the discussion. Hence, we have rescheduled SRSG Gambari briefing for the afternoon of Tuesday 17 December.
Some comments for our business on Tuesday December 17:
1. Working Group on Sanctions: The Working Group is scheduled to meet in the afternoon of Wednesday December 18 which would make unnecessary any consideration of the matter during the consultations on Tuesday December 17. In consultation with the Chairman, this matter will reappear in the provisional program of work at the soonest date possible.
2. Cyprus: Special Adviser De Soto will be in New York next week and has requested to meet with the Council for an update on the latest developments. He will brief the Council by the end of the morning.
3. Other matters: As agreed during the last CTC meeting and by Ambassadors in the Special Event at the Council of the Americas that was held on December 11, we hope to have a brief discussion on matters related to the broader issue of terrorism and the response of the Security Council. After that Ambassador Greenstock will introduce a draft PRST that was discussed in the CTC.
Some final comments:
One, next week we may need to consider the draft PRSTs on Liberia and Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict currently being discussed at the expert level; and two, attached please find for your reference an updated version of the program.
Have a great weekend!
